There has been a lot of new urban designer toys coming out recently and unfortunately i have not had a chance to keep tabs on everything but from now I will be doing a update 2 to 3 times a week on the coolest designer toys out there. Get ready for a lot of pictures because Medicom have got quite a lot of new cool stuff in the pipeline and if your fan get ready to work some extra shifts this week. Lets start off with probably the most important new release. The new Bearbrick series 12 which will be release in June 2006. There are some cool designs from Andy Warhol, HR Gigier and my favourite, the Puppet from the movie Saw.

There are quite a lot of movie based toys from upcoming movies, newly released movies and old movies so here the latest from Medicom.
1) Wolverine vinyl figure just in time for the new X-men 3 movie.

2) Pirates of the Caribbean Kubrick and Bearbrick set. The sequel is going to be awesome (I hope) and these look just as good. Due for a October 2006 release.

3) Superman Returns Kubrick and Bearbrick set. Another massive movie and that silver Bearbrick looks amazing. Due for a August 2006 release.

4) Star Wars series 6 Kubricks. You just cant get enough of Star Wars.

Next up we have the new Cap & Pep 100% and 400% Be@rbrick set. These are designed by Tag Line and are already available.

Finally we have the Snkr Frkr x NIKE CoLab bearbrick. I couldn’t find any actual screen shots so here is a picture of the design.

I hope thats enough Medicom, Kubricks and Bearbricks for you. Next time I will dig up all the latest on Toy2r and I will be starting something new with Vinyl Designer Toys.

DMX, who was recently in the news for being arrested after his crazy behavior in a London airport, is going through a spiritual phase and planning on changing his name. You may remember when Puff daddy changed his name from Puff Daddy to P Diddy and then later decided to drop the P. Well DMX is making a bigger name change and the new name may be “the Dog”. This is what DMX has to say;
It’s just the whole Dark Man thing. Because if you look at it, from a spiritual point of view, the Bible teaches us that we can speak things into existence. … And Dark Man, you know, it may not be the best name for me.
What do you think of the new name (which by the way is not 100% confirmed). I really like DMX and I don’t think a name change will make a difference at all. Just hope that he’s music does not change. You can read the full story at MTV. [Image via Wikipedia]

Before wireless digital home telephones we had the good old spin dial phones. Now Hulger have resurrected the classic vintage style of those telephones and created some very slick retro style telephones. There are 3 models available, the Penelope*Phone , the bluetooth Penelope*Phone and the P*Phone. They look very well built and the bluetooth Penelope*Phone is something I wouldn’t be ashamed to pull out in front of people. Another great feature is that you can buy adapters to turn the phones into VOIP phones. Prices range from £40 to £90. They are available direct from the website and many retail stores. Check here for your nearest retailer.

One of my favourite styles of retro art is pop art. A great example of this form of art is Tim Biskup, who also creates great urban vinyl toys. I came across some more great pop art work via lounge72. The artist Alexander Blue has a great witty style with wonderful character design in every piece of work. By looking at each piece you start to a visualise story in your mind becuase of the detail in each piece. The art seems to make you smile and you dont know why. I particularly like the cats and dog piece (above) with the 3 eyes and pop belly and the custom venue snowboard (below). Check out more of the great pop art work at the Alexander Blue portfolio site.

Who can remember shopping as a child with their parents. Do you remember how the shopping centers seemed amazingly enormous but as you grow older the same places you went shopping as a child don’t seem as amazing. I came accorss a blog called Malls of America which has some great video and photography of vintage shopping malls. The stunning photo above is from the 70s of a mall from California called the South Coast Plaza. Also below is a interesting and haunting video of the derelict Dixie Square Mall. Visit the blog now for more wonderful photography and some very funny retro advertisement videos. Now all I need to find is Malls of UK to bring back some memories of my own.

Recently everyone has been going crazy over the new Super Mario game for the Nintendo DS. So for that reason I went on some mario goodies hunting. Well I managed to find 3 things. I will leave the best till last.

Firstly I came across this short Mario Flash animation. It seems to me to have a manga style crossed with a retro cartoon style. Check it out here and let me know what you think. I thinks its quite cool and would love to see a longer version.

Next up is a competitor to another video I posted earlier of a real life mario act. This one is slightly different and a lot funnier.
Lastly is some great news for Nintendo fans. Do you remember the movie, The Wizard? If not you missed out on the best commercial/movie made for Nintendo. I remember watching this as a kid and there being a big challenge at the end that got me really excited. I don’t want to ruin it for anyone so you will just have to wait until it is released. A small clue though, Mario. In the mean time enjoy the short trailer below. [link via 4color rebellion]

This ongoing competition by worth1000 reminds me of work done by banksy (below). The above picture is my favourite featuring the classic game Operation. There are loads of other great ones to browse through and they are all just as good. [link via lines and colors]
