Growing up I played with lots of great toys, video games and board games. They may not be as fun now but they did bring me a lot of joy when I was younger and I have some great memories. I present to you the 5 board games I loved the most.

5) Cluedo - The aim of the game was to find the killer by accusing others, something all kids are use to doing. Eventually someone would find out who the killer was, what weapon they used and where it happened. If you are a mystery / crime solving fan then this is probably the best board game for you. It will also help your problem solving skills.

4) Operation - A game for people with patience and a steady hand. I don’t think I ever mastered this game because that buzzing nose always got to me and the frustration always got the better of me. Good thing I didn’t decide to become a doctor. Maybe now I will have the patience to complete this game.

3) Hungry Hungry Hippos - If you want pure mindless fun then I dont think there is anything that can compete with this. You press a lever over and over again swallowing the marbles and the one with the most at the end won. A game of pure luck but winning with luck is just as satisfying as winning using skill.

2) Connect 4 - The most simple game in this list but quite possibly the most strategic game. The aim is to get 4 colours in a straight line with you and your opponents taking turns to drop a different coloured disc into the slots. The joy of ruining your opponents line of 4 just before they completed it was priceless.

1) HeroQuest - The greatest board game I have ever played. There was so much to this adventure game that sitting there for hours being one of the heroes was truly engrossing. There was a choice of four characters with the coolest being the Barbarian and therefore being the one I always chose. I remember going through character slips at such a pace that we ran out and were forced to make our own. The bag guys or demons were all extremely cool especially the final and hardest bad guy. There were a lot of extension packs which I unfortunately never got a chance to play but I had enough enjoyment from the basic pack. HeroQuest deserves to be played by every board game and adventure game fan.

UPDATE: If you want to buy HeroQuest you will have to head over to ebay as it is no longer available. Check out these two websites as they have some downloads for HeroQuest;
